Argan Oil is known to be one of the rarest, hence most expensive oils in the world. Pure, authentic
Argan Oil is hard to obtain and the production process is time-consuming, therefor its price is high.
Not all Argan Oil on the market is real and undiluted as many producers may dilute it in order to
make it cheaper. It’s worth spending some extra pennies to buy 100% pure oil, instead of paying less
for something that could be found in your kitchen cupboard. Even buying Argan Oil in Morocco,
doesn’t guarantee that oil is not diluted, unless you are buying from a reputable supplier. TREE OF
LIFE buy directly from a well-known manufacturer in Morocco and it is certified by ECOCERT. On
the wave of Argan Oil popularity, there are many products popping up claiming to be “Pure Argan
Oil”. Unfortunately, there are a lot of brands not worth your money.
How do I avoid buying fake Argan Oil and to verify the authentic one and how to choose
a brand worth investing in?
1. THE PACKAGING
Don’t buy Argan Oil sold in clear or plastic bottles. Light breaks down the most valuable properties of
the oil and dark glass is the only way to store Pure Argan Oil. Glass packaging is also eco-friendly
and fully recyclable. Any Argan Oil sold in clear glass shouldn’t claim to be pure and of high quality.
That is why our Argan Oil is packed in a dark amber glass bottle with an easy-to-use pipette cap,
which also avoids contamination.
2. THE PRICE
Argan Oil is very challenging to produce, labour-intensive and simply can’t be cheap. This is not to
say that the most expensive Argan Oil is the best either. You want to pay for Pure Argan Oil and not
for expensive marketing campaigns and fancy packaging, right? The price of a product containing
Argan Oil is also determined by the concentration of Argan Oil in the product. Check the ingredients
carefully; you should not buy a product which has a low concentration of Argan Oil. As mentioned
before, the best is to use Pure Argan Oil without any chemicals and parabens added. Don’t be fooled
by expensive skincare brands that include Argan Oil at the bottom of the ingredients list of many
3. THE SMELL
Pure Argan Oil has a fairly strong earthy nutty aroma (some identify it as the smell of popcorn or
rubber band). The scent should disappear after few seconds upon contact with your skin, as Pure
Argan Oil absorbs quickly. Should you find the odour slightly offensive, rub between your palms to
warm slightly before applying and the smell will subside instantly. The best quality Argan Oil should
be also unscented. The scenting process eliminates the Argan nut scent along with many valuable
nutrients that makes Argan Oil so great in the first place. You should avoid strong scented or
odourless oil. Either way it is highly suspicious.
4. THE TEXTURE
Argan Oil should be smooth, light-weight, non-stocky and not too watery, absorbed into your skin
virtually instantly and without leaving a residue when applied in the correct quantity. When applying
to the skin, it should have soothing effect.
5. THE LABEL
Ensure that your oil is labelled “100% PURE”, “RAW NUT EXTRACT“ or “COLD PRESSED”, “FROM
MOROCCO” or “MADE IN MOROCCO”. It should carry the ECOCERT certificate and logo as well and
/ or indicate “CERTIFIED ORGANIC AT SOURCE”
6. THE COLOUR
Cosmetic grade Argan Oil has a light golden yellow colour. If the colour is too light, it is most likely
diluted with other oils. Culinary Argan Oil has a golden brown colour.
7. CULINARY OR COSMETIC GRADE
There are two types of Pure Argan Oil available: Cosmetic Grade and Culinary Grade.
To produce Culinary Argan Oil, the nuts are first roasted, which destroys most of the cosmetic
nutrients and the oilhas a definite roasted flavour, more suited to culinary uses. Cosmetic Grade is
not roasted and therefor contains all the essential nutrients beneficial to healthy skin, hair and nails.
Due to Pure Organic Argan Oil being a natural product, sediment is a sign of quality, purity and
authenticity. High quality oil, that is not highly refined, may have a tiny bit of sediment at the bottom
of the bottle which will appear a bit “cloudy”. Don’t be alarmed. You also don’t have to do anything, just
use your oil as usual knowing that it is the real thing. The sediment consists of insoluble particles in the
oil like fatty acids, tocopherols, carotenoids, sterols, etc.
9. THE INGREDIENTS LIST
Pure Cosmetic Grade Argan Oil should only have one ingredient: 100% ARGAN OIL (ARGANIA
SPINOSA), UNDILUTED & ORGANICALLY CERTIFIED AT SOURCE. No preservatives, no
fragrances, not even water. Research has shown that when you combine Argan Oil with any other
masking ingredients you actually DEGRADE the quality and integrity of the Argan Oil.
10. THE SOURCEOnly when buying Argan Oil from a certified manufacturer, can the quality and authenticity be
11. FAIR TRADE
